Guilty pleasure: Jamaica Kincaid (b/c she's so fucking crazy it's good)

/lit/ seems extra slow today. Must be the fucking fantastic weather here in Canterbury.

Anybody read The Waves? I'm using it in a paper about modernism and I love it. The way Woolf shows her characters ageing through different first-person accounts and their comparison to the environment is beautiful.

I would consider getting a tattoo some of the prose. It's that good.

Agree/disagree? Waves/Woolf general?

>Literary arrogance at its height, this book takes simple concepts and makes them obtuse. If that is an accomplishment, then I'll grant the praise. I would prefer some of her contemporaries like Waugh or Cathers who's prose gives me far more pleasure without the hubris - and in the end teaches me far more about life, and writing. Don't be intimidated by pedants who call this great, trust your own judgement and the emperor's clothes reveal themselves for what they aren't.

Aware of a novel's brilliance but driven demented by how boring the book is.
