> Norwichs Byzantium trilogy if you are prepared to cry a lot
Based, I unironically never cry when reading books or watching movies and shows, but the last chapter about the last day of Konstantinos XI and of the Empire made me cry like a bitch.
Also that venetian sailor who comes back to fight and die with the city… the final mass where both greeks and latins pray together… fuck I need to read it again…

I spent yesterday from 10 in the morning till 2 at night compiling and applying fixes to my print book. Is this the literary lifestyle?

The biggest hurdle is readers growing increasingly dumber.

People don't think about what they read, don't comprehend irony or allegory, they take everything literally. Attention spans grow shorter and shorter, people don't read books fully but skim over passages or entire chapters, pick up a word here and there, or only read dialogue. They miss a lot of important details, see only what they want to see, and get a completely false impression of what happens. This makes them confused and then angry.

The average reader is also ridiculously pampered, can't tell the difference between reality and fiction, can't tolerate unpleasant situations, any kind of setbacks, or losses. They live vicariously through the main character and expect everything to work out perfectly all the time, and quit immediately if things don't go their way. They also take what they read deeply personally, and assume that any bad plot turn is the author fucking with them, and won't hesitate to flamber the writer's person online in revenge.

I hope that if mankind doesn't destroy itself in the next 200 years, then maybe education will revive and people will learn to appreciate literature again. But as things stand, I'll probably never find success or appreciation in my lifetime.

I was so sure this was going to be my big breakthrough year. My readership had been steadily growing every year and I wrote a lot of awesome stuff. But the big moment just didn't come. Instead, the growth started to slow down. Dang it

I'm almost 23 (birthday on Halloween) and a virgin. I avoid people in general and women in particular. Let me put it this way... One of the things I love about philosophy and literature is the ability to interact and manipulate what you are reading. I enjoy turning things in my head, trying to see things from a different perspective, delving into the subtlety of it to try and uncover a truth underneath. Seeing a really beautiful women is the opposite of that. Real beauty can't be denied or thought around. It's like a punch in the face and all you can do is take it. I deeply resent the power that women like that have over me. I like to imagine myself as a free spirit and as someone who tries to lead a more contemplative life. However, when I encounter beautiful women it becomes obvious how far I am from those ideals. They make me feel self-conscious. I become acutely aware of my plain appearance, my lack of distinction or success in society and more importantly I am reminded of the part of me that craves all those things I normally renounce as petty and vain. I also hate how I feel about women who lack that kind of beauty, which is nothing at all. I just can't feel anything for those kinds of women except pity them for lacking it.

I can go on but I doubt there's a point. My behavior reminds me a lot of Lasch's description of narcissism. People and women in particular make me scared, angry, and confused about them and myself, but I also know that I have no reason to blame them for any of these feelings so I just avoid them as much as possible and limit necessary relationships to minimal courtesy.

I came across a local scifi/fantasy short story competition. I could cut the prologue of the novel I'm working on and send it, and I feel it could have a solid chance to win something. But the main prize is only 2,000 eurodollars. I'm not sure if that's worth butchering my book. They publish the winning works in their magazine, which would mean nobody else will take it after that. But then again, the book might never be finished anyway. Damn, what should I do?
