I went a lecture by Simon Armitage the other day on the potential of poetry/documentary, and the work he's done in the area. God damn, some of it's amazing. For example, they had an interview with an Iraq war vet, who had his jaw blown off, and his wife who's stayed with him, and he wrote her the most beautiful poem about how she had to learn to love her husband again.

I say "he wrote", but that's not really true. He took the essence of her words, in some cases her words verbatim, and twisted them until they were at their most expressive. It finishes the with the wife reading the poem, and I swear I nearly cried. That's good stuff right there/

Good plan. Alternatively, try Nocturnes, by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's a collection of nice short stories, easy to follow, and a great starting point if she feels like reading more.
