If bearded men in florid grey uniforms and cowboy hats, speaking an alien dialect of a language you don’t know a word of, and carrying this funny looking square flag with an X that you’ve never seen before, came out of nowhere and mowed down all the Nazi SS soldiers who were arresting you with antique weapons from the days of Napoleon, all while screaming and hollering like the animalistic demons from your childhood nightmares, you’d probably be dumbfounded and wondering what the fuck is going on too.

People forget just how remote the American Civil War was to Europe at this time let alone today. Confederate soldiers would basically seem like alien visitors from another planet to Anne Frank.
