I've exclusively read ebooks for the last decade of reading so it's hard to tell exactly what the page numbers are.
But I believe Les Miserables and Outlaws of the Marsh are both in the 1400-1500 page range.
I think the Bible is longer than that, so if I ever get around to finishing it, it'll be the Bible.
As far as EVEN LONGER books that are on my reading list, eventually I want to read
>The Count of Monte Cristo
>War and Peace
>In Search of Lost Time
>The Unabridged Mahabharata

Jesus Christ, this board has become fucking shitty. Can we have a thread about Asian fiction and poetry? Non-fiction dominates this board too much and there's so much great fiction and poetry from China, Japan, and India.

Is Outlaws of the Marsh the earliest instance of fiction being used as a form of political dissidence, resulting in its being banned by the state?

Outlaws of the Marsh is based and hilarious. Although it's long and at times can be repetitive since there are certain plots that get repeated with different characters, but it doesn't drag nearly as often as you'd think a 2000 page novel would.

Not yet, but Sidney Shapiro's translation of Outlaws of the Marsh is amazing.

If you want adventure, comedy, and fantasy then Outlaws of the Marsh, Journey to the West, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms are the classic Chinese novels you should read.

If you want realism and Chinese Jane Austen, go with The Plum in the Golden Vase or Dream of the Red Chamber.

/lit/'s top 100 books poll for 2018 was woefully devoid of works from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Let's change that this year. Vote on what you'd be most interested in reading, and you're allowed to pick multiple options.

Fuck the meme trilogy. Fuck Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, and all the obvious /pol/ bait threads. Fuck the endless religious debates that have nothing to do with religious/philosophical texts. Fuck Shakespeare, fuck the Spanish, fuck the Russians.

Outlaws of the Marsh is an absolute masterpiece and I'm determined to meme this book until it breaks into our top 100 books chart.

Outlaws of the Marsh/Water Margin by Shi Nai'an.
>What did you think of it
I fucking loved it.
>What does it make you want to read next?
Journey to the West
>How does it compare to other similar works you've read?
Classic Chinese novels tend to be hilarious, the other major one I've read being The Scholars. Outlaws of the Marsh is more of an adventure/fantasy story while The Scholars is about, well, Chinese scholars (who are corrupt as hell). And speaking of corruption, both of these novels are also heavy on the political satire. Also, there is a weird thing in classic Chinese novels where each chapter ends with a cliffhanger as well as a direct address to the reader to "read the next chapter if you would know what happens next."
>Was it like you expected?
Outlaws in the Marsh being written in 1370, I wasn't expecting it to be as crass and vulgar as it is. I know there are probably different swear words in Chinese, but the translator had characters saying fuck and shit. But it's not just that, there's sex, brothels, and graphic violence.

One warning for those interested: just like The Iliad has long descriptions of armor, Outlaws of the Marsh sometimes has long descriptions of exactly who is commanding which regiment of the bandit army, and there are 108 fucking chieftains. Some parts of the book (which is something like 1500-2000 pages long) drag, but the best parts are really fucking good.

You guys talk about Murakami, Mishima, and Dazai too much. Can we get a thread on the classics of the eastern canon, such as Outlaws of the Marsh, Journey to the West, The Tale of Genji, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, etc.?

Is anyone still reading Outlaws of the Marsh?

Some people wanted us to read 7 chapters a week to get the novel finished somewhat quickly, but if people are having trouble finding the time then maybe we should reduce the reading load.

At any rate we are supposed to be on Chapter 21 today but I'm currently halfway through Chapter 20.

There have been /lit/ reading clubs for the postmodern meme books and I think there were a few for western classics such as War and Peace, but would anyone be interested in a reading group for the Great Classical Chinese novels? I was thinking we could start with Water Margin/Outlaws of the Marsh since it's the earliest out of the six novels with the "great classical" label.
