What book do you wish you’d written? For me it’s The Great Gatsby. Each word is charged to the uppermost with feeling.

Are you a Nick Carraway or a Gatsby?

If you are a Nick Carraway, stop being a Nick Carraway, it gets you nowhere. Be a goddamn Gatsby.

Back then I used to relate to Gatsby, to see him as the ideal romantic hero, an American Werther. Now, finishing the book once again, I can't help but to sympathise with Tom. Gatsby is effeminate and histerical, someone who ironically reinvents himself, starting from scratch, but just in order to chase the past. Tom, on the other hand, is as much a man as one can be. He's manly and strong-willed. Fitzgerald was a liberal who was in the process of losing his wife to someone much manlier than him, so I can see why he chose to portray Tom as a dump conservative. He even does the same in Tender is the Night. Fitzgerald was very explicit in using writing as a cope mechanism for him to deal with his demons. And seeing how miserable he was with Zelda and Hollywood, I'll take all of his stories as cautionary-tales from now on.

I think a lot of people misinterpret the true, or perhaps greatest meaning of this book. Gatsby was an idealist, and through this idealism he accomplished much. He saw the world with rose tinted glasses, but in the end, he was able to actualize most of that. He fell for the folly of idealism, just as Caesar did, and died as a result, but when you reflect on his life, as Nick did, you see that he lead a much better one than Tom. In this sense, it is a reversal of the common trope of "evil idealists and unchecked dreams", making Gatsby, in a sense, truly great, and someone we should aspire to be. Of course, there is more nuance to this, but the main point is pretty clear, and one that many fail to grasp. I think this is why the novel is wasted on so many young teenagers and idiots, as they cant really grasp its importance outside of its prose.

Can we discuss this book? I don’t read much at all but I read this a couple days ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. I never read it in high school, never needed to, so perhaps you guys might have a different outlook.

Any other books similar to it? I love the opulent setting and the more realistic look at the rich.

What's the point of reading fiction? You could be using that time to reading something actually useful
>hurr durr prose
Any decent non-fiction is AT LEAST as well written as your made-up escapist bullshit
