My taste in literature is generally straightforward. I Hemingway and Steinbeck and Nabokov and others who are mentioned in that vein. I tried reading Gravity's Rainbow at one point, and I recognized a sort of charm in it, but otherwise it made me feel too lost and I dropped it about 60 pages in.

That all being said, is it a waste of time for somebody like me to try to tackle this one? I don't care if you call me a pleb, I can say with confidence that I'm a more well rounded individual than any of you, I'm just curious about whether or not I should spend my money on this.

Is Infinity Jest hard to read?

By hard to read I mean: is it The Sound And The Fury Quentin Section Tier?

When does this book get humorous? I'm 5 chapters in and with the exception of the spastic tennis guy at the start and the mother running around yelling "Help! My child ate this!", nothing funny has happened yet alone something infinitely funny. Will this book get funny or is the title ironic? I hope it's not ironic because this guy is all about being sincere, correct?

If you were writing a shitty, deplorable human being for a character that also read books, what would be their favorite book?

/lit/ memed me into reading this. I have a question though: aren't people who use the three bookmark method complete pseuds?

Like, before I read the book, I heard that the preferred method of reading it was three bookmarks, one for where you are in main text, one for footnotes, and one for page 223. But now that I'm passed page 223, it seems like that's just an excuse for someone to cram another bookmark into their Infinite Jest to make it seem like a special, life-changingly unique novel. DFW already expects you to remember a ton of little details, is it really that hard to just read the years and remember their order?
