Used to date a bookish feminist. She told me that she received a lot of criticism for not having purple hair, or a septum piercing, or visible tattoo's.

There is peer pressure. And they rail against "female beauty standards" and in favor of things like fat acceptance.

But it's also just unhappiness. Being unhappy and bereft of hope looks uglier than someone excited and full of hope or humour.
