Not exactly, it's made clear that there is a disparity between Hermione's natural inclination towards hard work and the true academic (see Luna Lovegood). Hermione's path in life is that of social justice/labor studies and it's only natural that she goes on to work to disempower the rigid pureblood ethnic hierarchies and win rights for house elves. She works and studies in order to gain results unlike Luna who studies in order to expand her psychical boundaries. Gryffindor is much more profane than Ravenclaw in its symbology: McGonagall vs. Flitwick, Nearly Headless Nick vs. The Grey Lady, the lion vs. the raven. Rowling's anglican, liberal-capitalist ethos values the contributions made by the "troops on the ground" if you will.

Where are those assumptions even coming from? There is definitely a user-base here that comes in swinging with stuff like "im a nihilist prove me wrong" but they get shut down in >50 posts.

There's a lot of contention around Infinite Jest and Tao Lin, but I think most people who stick up for them have read their work. It's like ITAOTS on /mu/ - it might be over-used to the point where it's canonical or obnoxious, but it's still a genuinely interesting work of art, that can easily be backed up as valuable.

There used to be a lot more 'post your bookshelf' threads, but they've kind of died down. Even then, it was pretty civil, and people talked about which books were their favorites etc.
