You can't learn any life skills from books.
You can potentially learn specific skills that form the building blocks of certain disciplines. But not more general life skills. This of course makes reading philosophy a potentially fruitless affair.
I have never seen someone show a direct link between improved quality of life/problem-solving and the content of what they read. It's always a placebo effect no different from reading Motivational Literature.
I've never met anyone who was more readily able to communicate with their family because they read Ibsen, more able to observe the potential affordances of objects and improve their carpentry and parkour simultaneously thanks to reading books on Phenomenology, and contrary to popular belief: no one became better at business thanks to reading Sun Tzu, they may learn about what time of day to fight on the side of a mountain.
