Also, in many discussions among Chinese intellectuals, you'll see them criticize the tendency of westerners to engage in "excessive criticism" and "immoderate praise." The excessive criticism is this "China is going to crack up any second, two more weeks!" narrative, and the other is too lavish with the praise -- like "China is going to take over world... hooray!"

But these intellectuals see both as (a) wrong and (b) the immoderate praise as kind of like a trap. C'mon China... go send troops to Afghanistan or whatever... it's all yours. And their attitude is simply "no thanks." For one, they don't want to, secondly, they wouldn't succeed if they tried.
