I did this on my second read with 2 sets of annotations. It took a few months but it was extremely worthwhile. The book becomes 98% clear and it absolutely lives up to the gigantic reputation.

I read all the annotations for the chapter first, then read the chapter and re-referenced them for confusing bits after reading the chapter. This kept the actual engagement of the book pretty smooth.

If you're the type to go deep into rabbit holes, you could do worse than aiming that energy at Ulysses for a season.
