modern classic or a piece of shit?

anyone here read Gun Slinger, the first book of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King? If so, did you like it? A brief summary perhaps? Recommendation? My friend says its a really good book but I want just more than one opinion

What does /lit/ think of the Dark Tower serie?
I started reading it, at first it was really hard, the first book is written crudely (for my taste) and all wtf-ish, but the second one was way better etc', now I'm at book 5, wolves of the calla and I like all the tie-ins with SK's other books.

So, The Dark Tower.

I understand that bits and pieces of King's other books are referenced in the series, but how much should I know about them? Are his other books required reading to really get into the series?

On my first readthrough of The Dark Tower, Eddie just died.
Be honest with me, /lit/. Does anyone but Roland make it to the tower alive? (I know he makes it, just not the exact details)
