I noticed a hard exception to the rule is the conservative types. The older conservatives are actually disillusioned liberals, so they have at least a modest grasp of their "enemy", but the younger conservatives tend to just be vomiting what their parents are saying.
You can also tell a lot about the difference between a guy who says "I'm a nazi" and a guy who says "I'm a national socialist." To be frank, the self-proclaimed nazi is probably a dangerous, mentally ill person. The self-proclaimed national socialist probably has actual values. To be fair, however, this is only in my personal experience. Although, I don't go to stormfront or hangout with many politically minded individuals except in IRC, and the group is more academically inclined.

While it's true that he wasn't heavily geared into economics, he wasn't really wrong if you read between the lines of what he did comment on. He was against usury, which is one of the two biggest complaint people usually have with regards to capitalism, and his "jewocracy", which is just Jewish-commanded plutocracy, which is the other thing people complain about (Although they do drop the "Jew" part of it.) I don't think anyone can really fault those criticisms.
Most of what the people who were aligned with Rockwell liked to talk about was something like guilds, planned economies, etc. It gets complicated for people who think in terms of capital being the end-all, be-all. This is why so many americans accuse "the nazis are commies" and all that.
