Speaking of Rome, as >>15601541 does, the only way forward is to simply do away with democracy and do away with the Republic. Heterogeneous countries with representative governments always devolve into chaos in the end, and monarchy/empire is the result if they survive their period of strife. An empire with a huge amount of different peoples and folk in its borders cannot survive if it is ruled by the "will of the people." Rome becoming an empire was the end of Rome as a republic, because Republican Rome did not have the hard strength and the tight grip necessary to manage a hegemony made up of various nations and peoples. Only the raw strength of absolute authority can manage an empire.

So if America does not break apart, this will be because it casts off democracy and its national government eschews any hope of being representative or democratic. An empire as diverse as America's must be ruled with a firm hand.

This is exactly what happened to Rome. The Founding Fathers knew what happened to Rome and they tried to construct a republic that would not suffer Rome's fate. But they were unable to do so. When a republic becomes a superpower, its transition away from republicanism is inevitable. When a republic becomes an empire, it inevitably becomes imperial and monarchical. The Founders guessed wrong. The United States cannot escape Rome's ultimate fate. It will either become a proper empire or it will be ripped apart.
