Sounds like Christianity meets the eastern definition. Need to bring back druidism!

"Paganism" is just "not-abrahamism." There were and are pagans who are not overt polytheist but some variety of monotheist, monist, pantheist, etc. It is a christer cope to argue that the neoplatonists which they borrowed from are somehow not pagans because they were monists. What you really mean to say is that their theology was the easiest to appropriate in the event you found it difficult to convert educated Hellenes to your cult, which was entirely based on following around a magician who said he was the son of the Judaean god.

Although this may be hard for 2016iggers to understand, even though it applies to them, most native westerners (i.e. those not of recent immigrant stock) were not raised as devout Christians, and Christianity consists of buildings where people get married or have grandma's funeral, bad news headlines, and odd political controversies that seem to involve the rustic (or perhaps "pagan") population that lives outside cities taking issue with the latest advances in human or civil rights. And that's really it. But all the alternative religions, whether new ager or traditional practice, are not-Christianity, and as not-Christianity the spiritual seeker can project on to them all the things it wants that Christianity does not seem to offer. And not offering vs not seeming to offer are effectively the same thing for pragmatic minds, since who would bother to investigate what they already dislike?

Great thread. Any idea why the English translations of Dumezil are so expensive? Is he out of print? Deleuze cites him a couple of times and Zone printed one of his books so you'd think that would help.

What are some books that can introduce me to paganism?
