The Dark Road, published in 2012. It's a magical realist novel written by an exiled Chinese writer about the one child policy. The last descendant of Confucius keeps trying to have a male heir with his wife, but everything from government forced abortions to birth defects keep getting in his way. Eventually one of the fetuses simply decides to stay in his wife's womb for five years because the reincarnated soul figured out it's better to stay inside the womb than leave it.

Uh... I'm not sure she'd appreciate a gritty protest magical realism novel about the one child policy, but The Dark Road is one of the best contemporary Chinese language novels (the author is exiled from the PRC but writes in Chinese and his wife translates for him).

The Dark Road by Ma Jian. It's about one of the last descendants of Confucius being obsessed with having a male heir but already has a daughter and has to avoid the government with his wife because of the one child policy. It's extremely critical of both the Chinese government and the misogyny within elements of Confucianism.

The author is a Chinese exile who went back to China illegally to do research for the novel. It's amazing.
