If you really think about, the tragedy of othello is actually the tragedy of Iago: a story about a man corrupted by a society that doesn't allow him to ascend, a man so consumed by his ambition that he thinks anybody content with their position in life is a soulless slave, a man who tires of endlessly kissing ass and wants speak freely but can't out of fear of losing what little life he's built (as shown by the exchange between Iago and Brabantino, "You are a villain" " You are-- a senator", in which you can clearly see Iago preparing a response, wanting to defend his honor and insult Brabantino, but deciding against it), a man who devoted his entire life to being a soldier and is yet ignored time and time again, a slave so broken and alienated that he can't understand how one can live for anything other than himself, that love is something other than your hormones telling you to fuck a girl.

Is Iago truly the greatest villain in literature, or just a meme?
