The google docs novels were the most impressive aspect to old /lit/

Also there were more discord server links floating around. 90% of the people in them were narcissistic sociopaths but they were smart and actually read books.

I think discord killed /lit/. That, and for anyone young and decently intelligent, wasting their thoughts on anonymous image boards instead of sharing them with friends becomes too tragic the older you become.
That's my theory.

95% of philosophy is just arguing over semantics
Most questions that people see as profound are ill posed and could be resolved by properly defining everything.
>Ship of theseus
>chinese room
>anything to do with determinism
These are all literally not worth discussing

How GREAT is he, when you get right down to it?

I realize Infinite Jest has a special resonance for many people who post on /lit/. Many of you grew up with the book, and reading it was a fundamental moment in your adolescences. I don't want to diminish those moments, any more than I would diminish the moments someone experienced growing up and reading Harry Potter.

However, we talk so much about Wallace and how seminal he is. Is he really? Is DFW a 'great' writer?

When I say great, I mean great on the level of Melville and Goethe, Joyce and Faulkner, McCarthy and Pynchon. I mean a writer of transcendent power.

Is Wallace such a writer? Will we be reading him a hundred years from now, five hundred years from now, a thousand years from now?
