Well, youwill enjoy Moby-Dick one way or the other. If you read the book first (which I would suggest) then as you read more of Shakespeare and the KJV, you will suddenly become more conscious of the depth of his writing, but in the meantime you will feel the strength that those depths give to the book.

No. A classic is only determined to be one with the passage of time. You'll know if it is a classic in thirty years or so, maybe longer. Moby-Dick was a classic, but no one new until after Melville died. Many such cases. Sad.

The unknown God 'gainst whom struggled Captain Ahab...
>“Hark ye yet again—the little lower layer. All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event—in the living act, the undoubted deed—there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there's naught beyond. But 'tis enough.”

Not every book is meant to be read aloud, but for M-D it works!

Great stuff. These lines in particular really blew my mind when first I read them. Hell, they still do.
