>If we say that Chinese civilization, when confronted with the challenge of Buddhism, engineered a great revival through the efforts of Song-Ming Neo Confucians, which then spread Chinese civilization from China proper throughout East Asia, then we should also say that when confronted in more recent times with the challenge of the modern West—Protestantism and liberalism—the Chinese nation is today again undergoing a great revival. The present great revival surely means that Chinese civilization is spreading and extending itself into even more parts of the world. This undoubtedly constitutes the greatest historical mission of the Chinese people in the Xi Jinping era.

Sounds like they're going to attempt a 'third position' - the article reads as if to set out a marker to the rest of the world that China has always absorbed, disintegrated and come back 'stronger' than before. With China's new position in the world as one positioning itself as a global superpower, this would suggest that to obtain hegemony they are going to do the same - absorb western thought/ideals and 'mould' it to a global 'thought' with Chinese characteristics.

What is it that makes people think typing like this in a book review is acceptable?

> my little brother wants to write YA fiction
> I think it's kinda cool because, although I don't like YA fiction and I'm not part of its primary audience, as a writer myself I would like to talk to somebody within my family who is interested in writing and reading
> he asks for "big books" because he likes his shelf to "look nice" - this means that he will also take my Pynchon and my copy of Don Quixote just because they're chunky books and fill up his shelf more
> he wants to write sci-fi so for his birthday I buy him popular sci-fi works like Dune, A Scanner Darkly, Ubik and I Have No Mouth
> he doesn't read any of them
> he tells me his favourite book is Eragon
> he's 18
> he says he wants to write for a living but that he doesn't want somebody to edit his work/he doesn't want to edit his work; that he doesn't see any point to re-drafting work; he doesn't want to publish or promote work online; etc.
> finally read some of his first novel - a sci-fi about aliens who are discriminated against by humans (meant to reflect small town mentality regarding homosexuals) - and it reads like The Martian [i.e. "100 pirate-ninjas (yay) but I'm fucked (boo)" or something along those lines]

A girl asked me at uni how many people of colour / diverse authors I read and I struggled to think of any. She told me that I should "read more books by people who aren't dead white guys" and that I'm a bigot for ignoring all the "great stuff ethnics have to say in literature"

Well, OK then. What are some noteworthy books written by people from diverse backgrounds that seem to write about things that ruffle SJW feathers? I need some good authors here.
