A militant atheist is psychological type, or series of similar psychological types, rather than any sort of ideological movement. It exists due to feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty in modern times, where freedom is so readily available to so many. Therefore, even the notion of an objective morality appears threatening. These feelings of inadequacy naturally generate anger among individuals, who simultaneously wish to identify with some sort of victimhood or oppression.

When charismatic individuals, such as Dawkins and C.Hitchens emerge, these similar psychological use the philosophy espoused by these charismatic individual to forge an identity for themselves in the face of institutions they wish to view as oppressive.

This is a therapeutic experience for the militant atheist, as it allows them to channel their anger in the direction of a tangible entity. The greatest evidence of this is the fact that militant atheism is directed overwhelmingly at Christianity. Feelings of inadequacy are alleviated as they attack an institution that has shaped their society.

Subconsciously, the militant atheist wishes to maintain the church, and indeed wishes the church to be more fundamentalist than it actually is, as this allows for a greater proportion of therapeutic anger to be delivered. This is the reason for the prevalence of intellectual dishonesty and revisionism in militant atheist discourse; these are imperatives for these psychological types to maintain their conception of self-identity (in the face of their perception of inadequacy).

Ultimately, militant/New Atheism is modern phenomena that is broadly different from other sorts of atheism in history that is a result of social factors in contemporary society, rather than real philosophical differences with theists.
