Depressing literature general?

Pic related for me, not sure if I'm about to get flamed, I'm pretty new to fiction. The first half just about made me want to kill myself.

Almost as depressing also is reading the intro and finding out that conditions in meat packing plants are pretty much the same today as they were back then (immigrants working at sub-living wage, majority of market controlled by a minority of companies etc.), despite all the improvements that were supposedly made in the wake of this being published. Never felt my white privilege so strongly ;_;

What are some of the more miserable books you guys have found?

OP, just read Upton Sinclair's the Jungle... but
>>Imagine Jurgis not being a total dumbshit
>>End it with him going to a Ron Paul Ralley
