I browsed through the recommendations but didn't happen to see many titles about or from the Middle East. I was hoping to read more nonfiction works rather than fiction because I wanted to understand important figures and the surrounding culture, but I find myself unsure of where to start. Fiction is fine too, but I find that fiction is better tempered by an understanding of the period in question.

Suggestions?

right now, probably some imitation of a cool line of The Wire, like:

Never heard of it.

However, this is 'large scale' because he basically begins a religion and there are followers who believe he is the Messiah come to save the sinful universe from God's wrath.
In his quest to save the world he battles against the governments, other ideologies, it's a really crazy ride.
Won't say shit about the ending but I believe in my idea.
There's also space adventure elements such as alien races, galactic politics, etc

Done with first draft, and I've lost all motivation.
