What books can I read that will teach the philosophy? I want the actual concrete meaning of terminology and prescriptive methods of thought.

Is it even possible to be 'good' at philosophy nowadays without a doctorate? Everyone always says 'start with the Greeks', but that's what Ayn Rand did and her 'philosophy' is not even considered credible--not least because she probably forewent playing the masturbatory mental gymnastics that Continental philosophers do. But I want to do the masturbatory mental gymnastics.
