I'm reading Norwich's Byzantine history and he'll mention when they are secondary. He comments all the time "This is all we have to go on" and "here's the rumor.." or mention that this source was an enemy. I like his writing. Its kind of pop but thorough.

Read some Joseph Ellis (American Sphinx, and Founding Brothers) and his rightwing agenda kept seeping through to annoy. He's a good read, but no matter how moderate a rightwinger he is, the chapter dealing with every minute detail of the Hamilton/Burr duel *except* the motive, just to make sure we keep that dirt all over Burr, frustrates.
(Must get my hands on Vidal's Burr)
