Why does Western metaphysics privilege 'literacy' over illiteracy?

Is this hierarchy not arbitrary, and in fact, in an important sense meaningless, given that they are, as it were, two sides of the same coin?

Well, Monsieur Lévi-Strauss, one has to be outside the structure to describe it.

Your statement "inb4 Derrida" suggests a sort of hostility towards and apprehension regarding the work of French post-structuralist philosopher Derrida, whose work is infamous for its lack of clarity, over-complicated expression and inconsistent positions.
You are aware of this, and in fact quoted two instances where the unpleasant "language games" of post-modern philosophy are mentioned alongisde your expression of dread in anticipation of Derrida's introduction to the present discourse. You thus establish the hierarchical binary opposition of simple/complex philosophy, favouring simplicity. However, the statement "inb4", especially on an anonymous imageboard such as 4chan, is likely to elicit an ironic counter-response such as this very (meta) text. Additionally, your use of the term would suggest that you have at least some knowledge of the structures and mechanics inherent in a board such as 4chan, and thus you likely even predicted that Derrida's mention in such a way would perhaps even encourage his introduction to the discourse—thus introducing philosophical complexity over simplicity—contradictory to your more overt motives. Thus, your text is self-contradictory and to be discarded.

Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week, folks.

The question “Does the animal dream?” is, in its form, premises, and stakes, at least analogous to the questions “Does the animal think?” “Does the animal produce representations?” a self, imagination, a relation to the future as such? Does the animal have no only signs, but a language, and what language? Does the animal die? Does it laugh? Does it cry? Does it grieve? Does it get bored? Does it lie? Does it forgive? Does it sing? Does it invent? Does it invent music? Does it play music? Does it play? Does it offer hospitality? Does it offer? Does it give? Does it have hands? Eyes? Etc.? Modesty? Clothes? And the mirror? All these questions, and a large number of others that depend on them, are questions concerning what is proper to the animal.

Too much implying for me. boy.

Look, even Derrida is amused by your rustling.

"Among so many stereotypes and prejudices that circulate about deconstruction I feel it's painful to see that many people about the question of the canon think they have to make a choice between reading Plato or the 'great white males' and so on and so forth and reading Black Woman writers. Why should we choose? Even before the question of the canon became so visible, even before then, no one in the university could be simultaneously a great specialist in Plato and in Aristotle and in Shakespeare; the choices have to be made and that is the distinction of our conditions. Nobody can at the same time be an expert in Plato and in Milton, for instance, and we accepted this, it was commonsensical. Why, today, should we choose between 'the great canon', i.e., Plato, Shakespeare or several texts of Shakespeare and Hegel, and others on the other hand?
...Deconstruction at the same time is interested in what is considered 'the great canon' - the study of great works, western works - and open to new work, new objects, new fields, new cultures, new languages, and I see no reason why we should choose between the two. That is the tension in deconstruction." - Jaques Derrida
