What are some recommended historical novels?

There's an amusing bit in I, Claudius where all the male Roman patricians are awkwardly getting chewed out by Augustus for not manning up and getting married, when pretty much everyone in the audience *except* Augustus is aware that it's because the upper class women, flush with inherited wealth and property, had no desire to do so.

However, weren't women literal properties of the pater familias until they married? Could women just decide not to marry at all, like Graves implies in I, Claudius?
