According to William S Burroughs in pic related it takes a long time to develop a serious dependency on heroin/morphine/whatevs.

Heroin isn't a one try and you're hooked drug. It's just good enough that most people continue taking it. Also by the time most people have begun taking heroine they already have a fairly heavy drug problem so it's not a big jump to taking heroine regularly.
