Jade Smith is an intellectual too, so as John Green and maybe Snoop Dogg.

Only Zizek can save us, and he dislike that he's called a public intellectual.

See? You react with hostility to the implication that you take part in this phenomenon of power-relations among humans that you have identified as bad and immoral. Too bad your attitudes and opinions don't have any influence on the phenomenon to which you apply them. Instead, you are defending the very concept of social hegemony from which your conception of evil oppressors and pitiable subordinates proceeds by positing that there is a moral high ground to be attained. "If everyone was like me, then everything would be better": that positive ideology is what you and the racists have got in common, and that's why I don't take you or your worldview (which you appropriated, by the way, from other people) seriously. It is fantasy that you concoct to make yourself feel big.

The Monk.

>The Monk recounts the diabolical decline of Ambrosio, a Capuchin superior, who succumbs first to temptations offered by a young girl who has entered his monastery disguised as a boy, and continues his descent with increasingly depraved acts of sorcery, murder, incest and torture. Combining sensationalism with acute psychological insight, this masterpiece of Gothic fiction is a powerful exploration of how violent and erotic impulses can break through the barriers of social and moral restraint.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, so here it goes...

The text sounds philosophical in a continentally poetic way.
It is a bit vague outside of context though. It could be talking about multiple personality disorder or about the metaphysical subject. Whether this is an allusion to a lifestyle or not I can't tell for sure.

>One travels; one takes himself intact. With a will.
When you travel, you do so in your entirety. As in the whole body works together to move. The limits drag the content along so to speak. This might seem trivial in itself, but it is relevant for the consciousness described in the rest of the text.

>One is a coherent being – needing nothing from the place one travels to but food, shelter and most importantly that the place one visits appears and in appearance yields a confirming example of one’s sentience.

As long as consciousness also has the self (we can be conscious without being self aware, such as in states of aphasia) and as such he is a coherent being, it just needs confirmation of its constantly renewed state of sentience through the fact that it has a world (the visited place appears to him).

>Or one travels in disarray, undone, a consciousness formed around displacement, needing nothing that one can put a finger on, needing a center.

One can of course lose himself in his activities, conscious only of his actions, confirming himself through the plurality of determinations (such as determined actions like studying, eating and so on) that needs (this is an important point, but not discussed here so I won't go into it) something to tie it together, a self. However this self, or subject as it is called, is not something that can be confirmed empirically (in neuroscience for instance) or theoretically (it can be taken as the interaction of various faculties, or just the illusion that a single faculty gives, or a naive abstraction of multiple faculties that have something in common). So it needs "nothing that one can put a finger on", a phrase that might be taken as a negative (it doesn't need anything touchable in some way) or as a positive (it needs the "nothing" that one can put a finger on).

Well, my intellectual wanking session is over for now. Hope I helped.

I need an especially easily-understandable and entertaining essay/article by Zizek to convince my writing teacher to use him in our class (basically she wants us to find an interesting cultural critic because she only knows of one and is looking for others).

Any suggestions?
