I'm writing a college essay on Catcher in the Rye tomorrow about Holden's hidden depression.
Anyone have good quotes with page numbers or even just points to help me?

Okay, so, fuck me, I think I've finally figured out why I hate English (class) books so much. For the longest time I thought it was the shitty pacing, or the incredibly contrived plots, but then I looked at other books that did those same things and were still damn good in their own right. I think I've got it now, though. It's because they don't end.
Catcher in the Rye, for example. It's the first half of a coming-of-age novel, where the protagonist is a horrible, childish little shit who needs to get his teeth kicked in. Then it ends.
No plot, or character development, or attempt to tie up loose ends, or anything. Just fucking ends right there so fourteen-year-olds can feel justified in their worldview because Holden is never challenged on anything.
I just-
Why do people enjoy this?

So what's the hate against this book? It seems that many who hate seem not to understand the book and/or hate it because they don't like Holden

Why is this book so famous? Why is it regarded as a classic in literature? Why did all my fucking English teachers in highschool praise this book as the second bible? I can't wrap my head around this /lit/, teach me why this book is good.

Just finished this today.

I definitely see where the complaints about Holden complaining about everything come from, but I thought I found where this is explained.

At the end of chapter 24, when Holden explains that he had been harassed in a sexual way about twenty times when he was young by perverts that were around him, wasn't that meant to explain why he has such a shitty view of the world around him?

Is it a combination of bad surroundings and past occurrences that causes him to view everything the way he does?

What has this book done to garner so much critical acclaim? I read it today and it was certainly above-average, but nothing about it blew me away.

What was Mr. Antolini doing to Holden when he was sleeping in his apartment? Was Holden being paranoid by thinking it was something perverted? Is Mr. Antolini attracted to Holden? Was it really nothing?

hey /lit/, for a writing assignment I need to write a believable epilogue to The Catcher in the Rye. anyone have any inspiration to offer?
>inb4 do your homework
Not asking anyone to write it for me, just want some ideas.
>inb4 lol non-lit fag
I frequent this board a lot, and occasionally post, though I don't have a boner for Joyce.
>inb4 plebe/shitty book
I liked it a lot.
