Currently writing an essay, analyzing Such is my Beloved by Morley Callaghan, and Waste Heritage by Irene Baird. Due to poor planning on my part (leaving books with a friend who is gone somewhere), I need to write it from just a few quotes I pulled while reading. Since I have no access to additional quotes, my essay NEEDS to be on these handful.

Here's my question: in Waster Heritage, there is a character (Eddy) who defines a Depression era Canadian. He's literally full on a symbol of the "man brought down by hardships". Can I define a protagonist as a symbol? I was going to compare symbolism in both works, and Eddy seems like a prime candidate, although I've never did symbolism with a character before.

Question 2: When doing a comparison essay, should I compare specific examples of topics, or just the topics themselves? I am trying to compare symbolism (which I have a lot of in both works), but there are no symbols which are present in both. They both have rich symbolism, but none are present in both. Can I just compare the extent of symbolism used or I need specific examples (eg. compare religious symbols in both works = using specific examples; comparing symbolism in general = symbolism comparison).

Almost every time the author tries to describe architecture of any kin in a book, I never quite visualize what he's trying to describe.
This becomes a problem when we have, for example, a scene where the characters are trying to escape from a building and resort to an endless number of stairs, hallways, corridors and maybe ventilation ducts and sewers, so I'll have a lolwat expression troughout this whole scene because I won't even know what in the flying blue fuck muffins is going on.

Am I the only one with this problem? Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention?
