So I`m going to a rehab facility in about 17 days, and I decided one of the ways to keep me from blowing all my heroin would be to invest in some literature to read while I`m there. I got "In the realm of hungry ghosts" by Gabor Mate on my list already, what else should I check out?

I hope you're right, sometimes i cant finish a single page without my thoughts wandering in some odd direction. One reason I'm trying to develop a reading habit is to combat this sort of frequent distraction but its hard to see if I've made any progress.

/lit/, how do you stop being so addicted to the internet/4chan? I have no friends so if the internet or laptop craps out I literally have a panic attack and want to cry because there's nothing else in my life that is a substitute for it.

I've read the Stoics(Aurelius,Epictetus etc.) but even that doesn't really do anything for me.

What the fuck does 'direction' and 'progress' in life even mean? Life isn't a video game where stuff like that is cut and dry.

Yeah, I finished it and the first hundred pages or so were by far the best imo. It doesn't really get anymore interesting after that, so if you're not enjoying it you might as well drop it.

>how shitty is your major that college and whatever job you'll get with your degree are MORE onerous than unstable 9-5 jobs at bistros?
the whole concept of uni as it is nowadays (maybe always has been) pisses me off; i really have a hard time exciting myself about five to ten years of studying; and it wouldn't be quite so bad if it wasn't studying explicitly _for tests_ rather than for the subject, because that's what it feels like, working through heaps of the last decade's multiple choice test sheets rather than reading actual GOOD, quality books and research on the topics, working on tangible problems rather than exercises in academic cocksucking.
not really that into my major either, or the job prospects i'd have once i'll have finished.

but yeah, it's a consideration.

I know this is only indirectly /lit/ related, but can we talk about smoking, and the implications of quitting? Are there any books, articles worth reading?

I've thought a lot about quitting recently and what bothers me most is that i feel like smoking is, in spite of all the physical harm it does and how much of a nuisance it can be to some (to be near smokers), a cultural treasure; something that connects, something contemplative and innately destructive and revolutionary (because a very real, basic aspect of smoking is obvious self-harm and harm/annoyance to others).

I feel like in a way, smoking is one of the last great bastions of "living a pleasant, poetic, spiritual, contemplative life" over "living an ideal life" and, in a strange way, something that prioritises community over individualism (because it is often a social activity, and as stupid as it is, smokers will all suffer the harm they do to themselves together); because it is revolutionary (against an elite, a common enemy?) and something that's very standardised (packs almost always the exact same size, and form, only a small number of different brands per area).

Anyone?
