I really loved the "His Dark Materials" audiobooks as a kid. The series was done complete with voice acting: different actors for everything in quotes, and a terrific narrator

What is the most /lit/ YA series?

Is this actually good? I've heard people say the author is a fag but that the story is still good. What can I expect? The world seems pretty unique.

His Dark Materials is clearly the most /lit/ YA series. It's very well-written.

Harold Bloom and Lydia Davis preferred it to Harry Potter.

Try Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials", I think that'd be about right for his age. The first one has a young girl as the main character but she's a POS and has cool adventures and asshole parents who fuck her over. The second has a bad ass male character ~your nephew's age he should easily identify with. It introduces some light prepubescent sexuality so you might want to clear it with his parents. The third goes heavy on religion vs evolution (allegorically but it's blatant), so again clear it. Nice end to the trilogy with the two of them rescuing children from the evils of the adult world while having to make adult decisions, etc.
