This. Also read Thomas Szasz's works, such as "The myth of mental illness" and "Schizophrenia: The sacred symbol of psychiatry" to flex on the psychs. I did that and I'm now noted on the national medical register as too powerful for psychiatrists, they don't bother me anymore.

Unironically just stop believing in "mental problems". They're a spook invented by psychiatrists to put down dissidents, they only take hold if you respect psychiatrists and start identifying with the label they give you.

mental illness only becomes /lit/ when you start calling your psychiatrist a nigger for giving you one. I've been through over a dozen psychiatrists, all of them kicked me out because I kept trying to goad them into having a proper debate with me as to why I shouldn't kill myself. That is how i know im a good author. Letting yourself be labelled with a fake illness will only make you pity yourself, and that doesn't make for good writing.

Read just about any single page from any one of his books.

He doesn't say these people don't have problems btw. Just not a medical problem. Or if it is a medical problem, then it's not a mental illness. Like neurosyphillis. Neurosyphillis was speculated about by psychotherapists for years as coming from trauma or anything. As soon as they discovered there was an ACTUAL disease it was taken out of their hands. And of course, if it turned out that schizophrenia had an actual medical element to it, say a brain worm, it would be taken out of their hands.

As it happens though, mental and illness are not in the same category. Illness and health have always been in the material until psychology co-opted it. What you are talking about are personal problems in the vein of physical. It's like trying to view a software problem as a hardware problem.

Is this worth a read? I have just read Cruel Compassion, and I loved it, but I am worried this will heavily overlap with it

In this book it says you should be against letting transgenders transition. And instead they should at the minimum go on medication and in the most severe cases be institutionalized until remedied. What are your thoughts? It says letting them transition is akin to teaching a bulimic a more efficient way of vomiting. Thoughts? Quite the interesting book.

The Myth of Mental Illness by Thomas S. Szasz
The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch

The first is not as incendiary as the title makes it sound, its pretty standard reading for psychology students and really aids in understanding the limitations to the language we use in discussing, understanding and diagnosing mental illness. It is limited in some areas, and shows its age a little, but overall I found it a very useful book.

The second is not explicitly about mental illness, but addresses a lot of the experiences common to the depressed and anxious.Scarily relatable.

Neither of these books will necessarily tell you what you want to hear, but they will tell you what you maybe need to hear. They won't cure your depression or anxiety either, but will go some way in helping you understand why you feel the way you do, and how you can go about re-positioning yourself so as to feel differently in the future.

I know that the concept of mental illness is a spook, it's so obviously just made up bullshit, but yet I still feel a constant need to try and diagnose myself with some sort of psychological problem. Why is this, and are there any good books on this subject?
