The garhapatya, fire of the master of the house, representing the sacrificer (incl. his familial and economic ties) - must be lighted from a fire produced by friction,
saved from an earlier sacrificial fire, or taken from the house of a vaisya. The wife stands close to it. It representes the rooted quality of the man.
The liturgists call it "this world", "the earth". It is always round. The axial fire, east of the first one, is the ahavaniya - fire of the oggerings, properly ignis aspergendus.
It is the fire whose smoke bears the gifts of men to the world of the gods - next to, on one side, is placed the vedi, the turf couch on which the gods are thought to sit.
On the other side, next to the sacrificer, stands the brahman, who "assures by his mere presence the regular course of the rites".
This fire is "the other world", "the sky". It is oriented towards the cardinal points, and is quadrangular, obviously contrasting with the unoriented circle (the heavens are what determines orientations).
The third fire is "the fire of the right, or of the south", daksinagni. It is south of the axis which joins the garhapatya and ahavaniya, at the boundary of the sacrificial area, and it stands guard over this dangerous
side, from which evil spirits are feared to attack. The daksinagni is semicircular, fan-shaped. It is the "starved one" in the riddle of RV 1.164.1).
This is connected to the trifunction - the southfire is the warrior-sentinel, the master of the house is connected to the vaisya, and the fire of offerings is for the brahman.
The doctrine is also connected by the two axial fires with the division of the world into earth, atmosphere, and sky - and brahamanical science makes a division of "three fires": earthly fire, lightning, and the sun.
