Hey lit. The next book I plan on reading is Les Miserables. What translations have you read? Which ones do you prefer?

I loved the Count of Monte Cristo

The only thing that bugged me is how he treated Maximilian. He didn't really need to drive the kid to suicide before giving him back Valentine. I get that suffering vs hope is what the novel was trying to get at, but still.

I promised my dying grandmother I'd read Les Miserables and a couple of other classic books of my nation(Finland).

The problem is I haven't read a book in 6-8 years and when I did read I highly disliked it and didn't do it much. It's so hard and tiresome for me because I feel I am not accomplishing anything by reading. I'm a bit of a practical person and I fear I will just give up and forget the book.

I made a promise and I cannot break it. How does one get back to reading?

Please don't judge me. You know we stupid people exist.

Jean Valjean is too good of a person. You can't read his story without looking a little differently on how you treat people or the decisions you make in life.

I started reading this last week, and I have to say this book is pretty amazing, so many feels, however I just finished the part where Valjean buys Cosette, and I'm kind of confused. Can any of you guys shine light on what happened?

>Buries money in Montfermeil when going to retrieve Cosette (why?)
>Gets caught (On his way back to Paris?) and is sent back to prison
>Breaks out of Prison, is some how able to buy clothes and buy his way back to Montfermeil (Where did this money come from? He just escaped prison)
>Goes to the site where he buried the money and checks if it's been dug up, which it hasn't
>Then goes to the Thenardiers and spends a shit ton of money

Where the hell is all this money coming from? He buried the money he saved up before going to prison, but he has the money without ever retrieving said money after escaping.
