>I have no more to say—except that my future life (which thank God will not endure long) must be passed in indigence and sickness. I have no energy left, nor health. If it was possible, to put up with the fatigues of this place, and the inconveniences which my absolute want of necessaries subject me to, and as I mentioned before it is my intention to resign.

>It's queer; very queer; and he's queer too; aye, take him fore and aft, he's about the queerest old man Stubb ever sailed with. How he flashed at me!--his eyes like powder-pans! is he mad? Anyway there's something on his mind, as sure as there must be something on a deck when it cracks. He aint in his bed now, either, more than three hours out of the twenty-four; and he don't sleep then. Didn't that Dough-Boy, the steward, tell me that of a morning he always finds the old man's hammock clothes all rumpled and tumbled, and the sheets down at the foot, and the coverlid almost tied into knots, and the pillow a sort of frightful hot, as though a baked brick had been on it? A hot old man! I guess he's got what some folks ashore call a conscience; it's a kind of Tic-Dolly-row they say--worse nor a toothache. Well, well; I don't know what it is, but the Lord keep me from catching it.

la divina commedia is only enjoyable if you read it in it's original text. i believe only italians can truly understand what a masterpiece it is.

maybe i'm bitter because every american with which i discussed Dante kept repeating that they simply saw the divine comedy as just a self insert story.

if you didn't study italian history and only see the divine comedy as a self insert self fellating religious nutjob like the people i talked to you should kill yourself

Do you happen to lay down and rot (LDAR) sometimes?
Is there a philosophical reason to not LDAR?

>want to grow out of pseudo-intellectual 'highbrow' literature and go back to reading the beloved genre fiction of your youth
>tfw can't help but get annoyed at messy prose, cliched plots, and one dimensional characters
>tfw have to back back to reading pseud shit because it's literally the only books you enjoy

>decide to try and avoid /lit/ (and 4chan in general)
>first couple days sufferable
>thoughts fill up with nothing but /lit/ memes going unexpressed
>eventually this stops
>for the rest of the next couple weeks, spend most of free time reading
>don't feel the pressure of /lit/ while reading these books
>don't have to worry about what /lit/ would think if I told them I was reading these books
>don't have to worry about what memes I can make of, or the already existing memes around these books
>feel like I'm truly enjoying reading for the first time in my life
>overall more optimistic, energetic, and can concentrate better
>even try my hand at writing a short story (not a very good one, but proud of it anyway because it's truly mine)
>suddenly, out of nowhere, wonder what's happening on /lit/
>decide to go on /lit/, just for a minute or two
>a minute or two turns into 5 hours of reading and creating inane posts
>try to go back to reading
>tfw can barely read anything with the same pleasure and concentration as before

Does anyone else think /lit/ (and/or 4chan in general) is ruining their /lit/ life?
