Here's a bit of writing that I did a couple of years ago. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The silence of dawn rang through the winter air and all was good. Then the silence was consumed. All was no longer good, it would never be the same. The street was littered with the bodies of men, women, children and animals alike. At first glance, it looked like the end. The end of humanity as we know it. But upon closer inspection, one body was moving, the body of a child, young enough so as to be of innocent nature but old enough so that the occasional memory can be saved. Suddenly there was a noise like the folding of paper, only amplified and lower pitched. And then there was a man. He wore a long dirty blue hood contrasting against a bright red robe. Although only small, he towered over the boy. Quick as a flash he enveloped the boy in his robe protecting him from the dust rising from the debris. The noise repeated and both man and child were gone. No signs of the event were left behind, earth had lost its last inhabitant.

This is thesaurus abuse, just like the rest of twilight. Realistically speaking, what else do you expect from a book which is almost endless, ceaseless, unending, everlasting, eternal repetition of the same shit about some guys chest being sparkly. Incandescent is not a good way of describing something sparkly. However, since she can't write for shit, she ends up repeating herself constantly, and has to find more and more ridiculous adjectives to describe her preposterous characters.

Gravity's Rainbow:

"She turns. 'Hold up my fur.' He obeys. 'Be careful. Don't touch my skin.' Earlier in this game she was nervous, constipated, wondering if this is anything like male impotence. But thoughtful Pointsman, anticipating this, has been sending laxative pills with her meals. Now her intestines whine softly, and she feels shit begin to slide down and out. He knees with his arms up holding the rich cape. A dark turd appears out the crevice, out of the absolute darkness between her white buttocks. He spreads his knees, awkwardly, until he can feel the leather of her boots. He leans forward to surround the hot turd with his lips, sucking on it tenderly, licking along its lower side ... he is thinking, he's sorry, he can't help it, thinking of a negro's penis, yes he knows it abrogates part of the conditions set, but it will not be denied, the image of a brute African who will make him behave...The stink of shit floods his nose, gathering him, surrounding. It is the smell of Passchendaele, of the salient. Mixed with the mud, and the putrefaction of corpses, it was the sovereign smell of their first meeting, and her emblem. The turd slides into his mouth, down into his gullet. He gags, but bravely clamps his teeth shut. Bread that would have floated in porcelain waters somewhere, unseen, untasted--risen now and baked in the bitter intestinal over to bread we know, bread that's light as domestic comfort, secret as death in bed ... Spasms in his throat continue. The pain is terrible. With his tongue he mashes shit against the roof of his mouth and begins to chew, thickly now, the only sound in the room..."

I have these books in my queue and I just finished "Cat's craddle" (after reading the unabridged version of Les miserables, I finished CC in 2 sittings), what book should I read next?:

-The End of Faith
-Slaugther House 5
-Pigmy

I also have the "Le petit prince" but I need to practice french more and by a stupid mistake I bought "El Evangelio segun jesucristo" a religious book by some minister instead of the famous satire of Jose Saramago. (lesson: always check the author's name when there is no cover available).

Let's have a word thread. Post your favourite words. Words you can use in normal discourse, completely obscure words, words that roll off the tongue or words that look aesthetically pleasing when written... or whatever.

Here are some of my favourites:

Excreta: excreted matter, as urine, feces, or sweat

Apocrypha: writings, statements, etc., of doubtful authorship or authenticity

Sodality: fellowship; comradeship

Nascent: beginning to exist or develop: the nascent republic

Cupidity: eager or excessive desire, esp. to possess something; greed; avarice.
