Guys I'm pretty new to reading for pleasure. So far only have read shorter books e.g. The Tartar Steppe, Notes from the underground etc. Read quite a lot when I was younger.

Moving on to larger books like the brothers Karamazov, I feel my main issue is that I have a low stamina for focus.
Anyone else experienced this? Could it be chalked up to just not enjoying the book ?

Are there any good books out there about reinforcing your ego in a positive direction, or at least discussing an alternate take on far-east wisdom and zen teachings?
After going through depersonalisation and not wishing it on my worst enemy, I find it pretty worrying how zen practice, and its continued support within corporate institutions (prescribing mindfulness and meditation to their staff) - as well as giving this to people who really shouldn't be delving too far into themselves because they can't handle it means we're sleepwalking into spirituality.

It's fucking insane to be a person, and robbing yourself of any egoist agency you have to make the decisions you need to survive and grow seems like pacification of the highest order.

After doing psychedelics, meditating often, and reading into bullshit like The Power of Now and associated books, I feel almost robbed. I don't think the deepest insight necessarily means you get a happier or more stable life. It just means you start directing everything into this 'panacea,' and that makes you as fucking hollow as it can. I like my sense of self. I want to keep it.

Is there ANYTHING like this being written?

give it to me straight: is God omnipotent? If He is, I understand the existence of evil and suffering on an individual level, but what about the suffering of the innocent and examples of mass evil? Why doesn't God intervene to stop child rape?

*sighs* It's okay to read these books while you're starting to learn to read adult books, but you NEED to understand that /lit/ is a board of intillectuals, who have already read all of those books. I myself have read each one in that stack multiple times. You are a pleb, and you will remain a pleb for a very long time. As you develop as a reader--IF YOU CAN--I suggest you stop all posting.

I want to write an /x/-themed graphic novel, guys. Could you guys help me with ideas? A lot of it is inspired by the urban exploration I did in the twin cities between the ages of 17 and 21. I explored almost every cave, tunnel, abandoned building, you name it for four years straight. crawling around in dark tunnels doesn't make the greatest content, but I thought the unknown, backwater literal hole-in-the-wall places could represent the darker, more unknown aspects of both society and the human mind.

growing up, I had a much different perspective than others. I didn't have many friends, quickly lost the few I had, faced a lot of problems at home, was confused with myself, had deep psychological problems that made me really at odds with other humans and society at large, and not just on an edgy teenage level. i really did feel alien, or like a ghost inhabiting a body that wasn't mine, in a culture completely foreign and odd to me. I always felt like an intruder in this human life. not only that, but i was very wholly aware of a massive universe that was almost entirely unknown to me, and that most of the world we live in is a fabricated bubble of bullshit. most people seemed too content with their little bubbles, and I was always interested in paranormal subjects, in the unknown, in the dark, unclear and mysterious. endangering myself in a dark sewer or abandoned subterranean complex of millraces and steam tunnels seemed a lot more interesting to me in my teens than something like going to the mall or seducing girls (i had a big complex about that too). i think a lot of my mind formed as an act of escapism from ordinary things I couldn't cope with.

additionally, I wanted to add some more action themes to add spice to the adventure. I didn't want the comic to be an author-insert or gary stu/mary sue thing and be some monster-fighting fantasy. maybe conflict with a cult or something, something both semi realistic but also questionable.

So this is relatively long and I don't expect anybody to read even half of it, but I've been editing this shit in and out for a month now and can no longer tell if it's any good or not. Would like to hear what people think.

i really like this. very brisk, and minimalist, compared to most styles i read and compared to how i write. i think this does a good job of showing not telling, but also not wasting time. i can learn a decent amount about the world and characters from what little is here. its cool m8.

Have Fiction books significantly changed your mindset/lifestyle? If so, which ones and why?

Is there even a reason to read fiction besides killing time? For example, how would a book like Moby Dick change you when it's about whaling(which you most likely don't participate in.)?

Can we do No Read November? or No Write November? A whole month, can you make it and not even read one page from a book or magazine? not even write down a sentence in your project?
