Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Abraham and Isaac and so on weren't invented from thin air, just like Nimrod wasn't, these were clearly stories people knew and told, and some (perhaps most) of these stories were simply old Mesopotamian parables and myths with no necessary moral content. But these stories, like the paradoxes of earliest Genesis, may have initially been far move ambivalent, even originating in traditions that saw the gods and fate itself as aloof and amoral.
