Is French theory just a self-referential pile of pretentious drivel? Or the best shot we have at grasping the real world?

Hey /lit/,

Is it possible to directly dive into Baudrillard's works? Is it recommendable, or should I have read other stuff beforehand - other philosophers or an introduction to his works? I haven't read much philosophical works yet, but I had no difficulties whatsoever so far, everything (Marc Aurel, Nietzsche, some other german philosophers) was fairly comprehendible. Where can I start with him? Directly to Simulacra and Simulation? I'm german by the way.
