because kings and clergy wanted to have something to represent value to exchange around, this created the merchant class which eventually overthrew that previous 2

probably all the way to babylon, like i said hauling around bunch of grain wasn't very feasible every time you wanted to trade for something made by an artisan

ideally to represent value of labor / service you can exchange for other goods, realistically fiat currency represents jack shit because you can just brrr it to infinity and then invade anyone who refuses to take your toilet paper money in exchange for goods and services

revolutionary spain, catalonia did it and it worked until western "liberal democrasies", fascists, monarchists and commies all together decided "this anarchy thing is very dangerous to all of us, if people ever realized they don't need us we are fucked" and ganged up on them to nip it in the bud
