Okay this is bugging me.

So in Ulysses, Dedalus says he serves an English master and an Italian, and he goes on to say that those are the Imperial British state and the Holy Roman Church.

Now, didn't some other artist say that same shit, but they were referring to Shakespeare and Dante?

I want to say it was Milton, but I can't find anything online. Help me out here. Am I just imagining things?

I want to read James Joyce's Ulysses. Will it kill me? What should I expect?

Also, which copy of the book should I get, I've heard some editions have been somewhat bastardized through excessive editing.
