What makes a book hard to read, in your opinion?

What are some difficult authors, what's the name of that short novel you never could bring yourself to finish, and that doorstopper you somehow burned through like a pamphlet?

Just read this one.

I'm looking for more novels like this, with that western style vibe, but not necessarily that violent/dramatic.

Bonus point if there's money involved in the plot.

"There were in the camp a number of Mexican slaves and these ran forth calling out in Spanish and were brained or shot and one of the Delawares emerged from the smoke with a naked infant dangling in each hand and squatted at a ring of midden stones and swung them by the heels each in turn and bashed their heads against the stones so that the brains burst forth through the fontanel in a bloody spew and humans on fire came shrieking forth like berserkers and the riders hacked them down with their enormous knives,"

Jesus Christ why didn't I start this book sooner?

I have a superiority complex which leads to me being abrasive to other people.

I try to not be condescending, but it is really difficult for me. Most people I meet seem to be very childlike. I really can't figure out if it is something wrong with me or if most people really are so mentally childish. Judging on the numbers alone it is probably just me.

I also compulsively make white lies when there really is no reason or purpose to them.

As for the book, it's a tossup between it and Gravity's Rainbow.

I think an intelligent reader once started would work out what the judge is like. It's way better than this cover.

McCarthy discussion - best book(s)?

View on his style (including themes)?

And just general discussion about McCarthy.

- Pic related, i'm reading it now, and it's probably the best American book i've read so far.

I can't stand this book.

I'm slowly crawling my way towards chapter seven, and I'm still not interested in anything.

Why some people praise this thing is beyond me.
The style is dry, it feels like I'm reading the transcript of a documentary. McCarthy goes over a chapter where the Kid is in a desert as if it was just another occurance, when it should be something tense and grueling and terrifying. The moments of action are like this as well, when the kid's army buddies get attacked by Indians (chapter IV or V) is also completely breezed by. No tension, no danger, it just happens and the book goes along.

Been reading this fucking thing for like 2 months I think. I've just been really tired and only reading like a chapter a week, I've started to get decent sleep lately though, so I plan in finishing it in the next couple of days.

Just finished reading this book, and it definitely deserves the praise it receives. What a fantastic book it was. The prose, despite being wearing sometimes, was overall pretty unique and incredible; the way he trivialized violence was specially interesting, since he was able, by doing it, to show it in all its horror and splendor without it becoming tiresome. Also, he created one of the single most impressive characters I've ever read, Judge Holden. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I found this to be a masterpiece of modern literature.

The ending, however, confused me a bit. It's not that I didn't like it - on the contrary, I don't think I'll be able to forget it any time soon - it's just that I felt that there was much more to it than I perceived. For instance, what was that last talk the Judge gave about dance? And what did the epilogue, with the man shooting fire in the holes on the ground, meant? What is your take on the ending, /lit/?

Also, McCarthy general, I guess. Any other book by him is as good as this one, or at least worth reading?
