Is this book worth reading? Thinking of going to Barnes and Nobles tomorrow after work and reading it over the weekend.

I'm on my third read of this book and it's a ride every time. You have read Musashi, haven't you /lit/?

Just finished this, although it took me way longer to read than it should have despite the prose being very basic. Giving a summary of my thoughts before filing it away in the back of my mind.

The best parts of the story were when it focused on Musashi and his developing philosophy, but that was pretty rare compared to how much the book faffs with side characters. A lot of chapters involved the love interest and sidekick trying to figure out how to get back to Musashi, and then once they do they're together for maybe 3 or 4 chapters before getting separated by some arbitrary shit so that the cycle can repeat again. Despite focusing a lot on the side characters, none of them get a good ending to their development besides one (Osugi), and even then hers felt it could have reached the same conclusion in a much shorter time.
The rivalry between Musashi and Kojiro felt a bit undercooked, though maybe that was done so as to stay more faithful to their real history.
I liked the final 2 chapters a lot, probably the best in the whole book. The fight between Musashi and Kojiro was pretty good, but the ending comes immediately after that and felt anticlimactic to me (though maybe that sort of ending is best when creating a fictional story based on real people).
As tends to be the case, I feel the pacing in the story was held back by originally releasing in a serialized format and not being created with the idea it'd be a single, larger work.

My own rambling thoughts aside, have you read it? If so, what did you think about it?

It's not 'technically' YA, but it reads like YA.

World's greatest swordsman's stops using a sword. Also there's like fifteen other main characters I guess.

It looks like fantasy/wuxia. Try asking in /sffg/ >>16799897

It's not fantasy, but you might like Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. Epic samurai story based on the life of Japan's best swordsman.

Defeating one guy in battle is the culmination of his 1000 page journey for enlightenment? Perhaps it's suggesting that you need a goal to strive ceaselessly towards in order to achieve fulfilment, escaping the body and becoming at one with the world through the unity of mind, body, and spirit employed for one purpose. Still, I expected more. Most of the other characters are simply forgotten or got rid of.

Musashi is a nice book with which to get into reading because it is very long ~1000 pages, a great story, and extremely readable.
