Just a reminder that TEAMS is the best way to enjoy medieval lit.

Well, since I have eclectic tastes, there are often books I want that are simply not available in hard cover at all (or the cost of the hardcover is outrageous). So I can lose the benefit and pleasure of reading them out of snobbish prejudice, or buy the book as available and read the damn thing. I usually do the latter.

I've had the odd pleasant exchange here, but it's mostly work-related curiosity. One of my students referenced this place years back, and I wandered in (it didn't seem so randomly hostile then). It was interesting to see the opinions and debates of literature from people who seem to be roughly the peer group of my university classes. Obviously this board is very much its own world, but it still seems to give a different perspective on the generation (or the subset of it that might study books). In class, it's almost impossible to get most students to speak at all, let alone energetically debate literature. That said, I often wander away for months at a time, and I don't contribute often.

I do love teaching. Marking is a slog, but my students are interesting and often quite surprising. I had a past student come up to me a few days ago and thank me for --of all things--making him read The Velveteen Rabbit in my children's lit class. It became an instant favorite, and he found something worth contemplating in it.

Honestly, I went wandering for years and thought I'd be in visual arts. I even got a BFA from an art college. The reading was so part of me it didn't seem like a potential job. Then I thought I'd be a high school teacher, but I learned how horribly I'd have to dumb down everything and the horrific vulnerability to parents (as a prof, I am literally not allowed to even confirm a student is in my class: I never talk to parents, and that's possibly the best part of my job). I came back to the literary path, got an MA, tried some other career ideas, then came back for the doctorate. So I always loved reading, but I didn't always know I'd be a professor.

I've had sex with dozens of women, I'm married with kids now, and I still read daily. Most of the teachers and profs I know have kids and families, so... probably not.

TEAMS are the way to go. Fully glossed but in the original language.

Manly poetry requires going back to an age when men were men and women didn't wear panties or bras.

Thanks. If you get into Middle English, the TEAMS books kick ass. They use original text with full margin glosses, and the range of great stuff is impressive.
