But I also am used to being up late and my new job has me getting up hours earlier, so that's an adjustment.

Some people don't like all the weight that Word carries (it's a very bloated program) and don't like the drab interface and abundance of buttons and options. Minimalist writers are comfy. It's kind of a fad, but there's some legitimacy to it.

Notepad is just fine.
