jesus christ why tf do we have this thread every other week?
this essay is cultural theory/philosophy. It's not a scientific study, and it's not up to scientists to discover which system is at fault for what.
Scientists give you the raw data (e.g. number of people with mental illness in a given time interval). They do not, however, interpret it. It is up to philosophers, cultural theorists, anthropologists etc. to interpret said data in whatever framework they want. The reason why he doesn't cite anything that says "mental illness is capitalism's fault" is because shit like this does not exist. It's up to people like fisher to connect the dots and make an analysis. Is this the first book of political theory you've ever read? It definitely seems like that to me.
I myself found lots of what he said very convincing (even though his interpretation of pop culture is a bit hit or miss for me). Though I really wonder what people like you have to argue against his points. I mean I see lots of people on here attacking him and his writing style but I never see any counterarguments. If the dramatic increase of mental illness is not a symptom of late stage capitalism then what is it? Please don't say "the internet".
