One of the few stories that almost scared me into a panic attack. It's fantastic if you can bare with the infinite amount adjectives.

Alright /lit/ can you guys recommend me some good horror books? Collections of short stories are acceptable as well.

ITT: "classics" you just don't enjoy.

This was interesting last time we had this thread so let's get another going. Also elaborate on why you didn't enjoy the book, please.

I didn't enjoy this book as I found that the protagonist was a very two-dimensional character. It may have been the intention for the reader to project themselves into the character's shoes, for it just irked me. It felt like there was no actual development other than his experience with peculiar events. It was well articulated and developed atmosphere effectively, but the main character was just empty.

Is horror a dead genre? Has there been any author who has debuted post year 2000 who has left a positive impression on you?

Hey /lit/, what are some spooky books similar to House On The Borderland? (that aren't written by Lovecraft)

House On The Borderland

I feel really torn on this book. One part of me loves the images, the surrealism, the anticipation and articulation of fear and tension, and it has this really strange enigmatic and inexplicable narrative that I could not even begin to describe in a synopsis (a man lives isolated from society, becomes plagued by a vision he has, he is then haunted by pig rats and eventually survives millions of years to see his vision become a reality… or something like that).

It's unbelievable in its detail and is really something to be admired. However, I felt that it was just spectacle over substance. There wasn't much development of characters or much exploration as to why the weird shit was happening in the first place, which makes me feel that the book was more like a writing exercise for the author for him to just drop all these ideas into one book and have then connected by string and glue. I dunno, it was a fascinating book but structurally it felt very weak.

I'd recommend it if you're interested in early gothic literature though, it'd be your cup of tea. dunno what I'm reading next, preferably something light hearted after that.
